Civilian workers knock down concrete walls and drill holes for pipes and wires. Their mission? To create a new home for the Nebraska National Guard State Museum and its vast military collection.
"It's like a treasure trove. It's like a treasure hunt every day," said Gerald "Jerry" Meyer, referring to the nearly 11,000 artifacts, documents and weapons.
As state historian of the Nebraska National Guard, Meyer's job is to keep track of and protect the collection, which was transferred from the State Arsenal building on the former state fairgrounds in Lincoln -- the museum's home since the late 1970s -- to a much larger armory building near downtown Seward at 201 N. Eighth St.
