When it comes to maintaining a happy, productive workplace, employees’ good health and well-being are widely understood to be key factors.
That’s why the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva has a vibrant workplace wellness program in place — and it’s why the state of Nebraska has a program of its own to recognize FCH and other employers for growth and improvement in such efforts.
Rising health care costs and alarming health statistics prompted former Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman to create the Governor’s Wellness Award in 2007. The award program recognizes organizations of all sizes for their wellness efforts — leadership, resources and time. All applicants supply data in the area of leadership, data collection, intervention strategies, policy/environment support and outcome evaluation. Three hundred eighty-three awards have been distributed across the state since its origination.
The two categories of recognition are the Sower Award, recognizing established wellness programs; and the Grower Award, which honors improvement of status. Initial categories include Small Sower (SS), under 50 employees; and Large Sower (LS), more than 50 employees. With improvement, the coding becomes Small Grower (SG) and Large Grower (LG).
On Sept. 19, Gov. Pete Ricketts and the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services announced that 54 Nebraska employers representing 34 communities were honored for offering evidence-based worksite wellness programs for their employees.
