Falls City Man Makes Concrete Urns For A Lifetime
16 Dec 2017
Cecil Bennett was not on the recent Nebraska Manufacturing Day tour in Falls City, but his garage door was open Friday and his 90-year-old hands were moving swiftly to finish one of his well-known concrete creations.
About 30 times a year, he mixes fine sand and Portland cement in a three to one ratio and pokes it down into a metal mold. It’s a simple manufacturing process that keeps people stopping by to talk with the long-time American Legion baseball manager and proxy Coyote hunter.
Bennett: “I just do it as a hobby. I don’t expect to make money on it, but they are a lifetime deal. Flowers you take out there are good for one day, they’re gone. These are good for a lifetime and I guarantee them for a lifetime – my life time.”
Don’t be fooled by the Kansas flag that hangs from outside the front door, Bennett’s concrete creations include plenty of Cornhusker-themed items.
Bennett: “I’ve got Husker everywhere around here. Yeah, I’ve also got the Kansas flag out. I’m a Husker fan and have been for years and years and years.”
He also makes concrete markers for pets that are painted with names and messages, such as my best friend. Although he is only known to the Falls City area, he says people from several states have stopped by.
He’s finished pet markers for all kinds of pets, including canaries and other birds.
He said Falls City is a good place for a life-time guarantee.
